A widespread secretive bird which keeps itself hidden from view by living in dense cover among the margins of lakes and rivers. The Waterrrail feeds on insects, crustaceans, worms, fish and also vegetation. The lifestyle it leads is similar to the more common moorhen. UK population estimate 3000 pairs.
